So lately I’ve been waking up extra early to go for a run before work. I’m a nurse by the way.
I’m trying to lose a bit of weight and running just happens to be one of the easiest ways to exercise.
All you need is some trainers and the outdoors. Pure and simple.
I both love and slightly hate running though.
I love it because I get to run just as the sun is rising and the fresh air helps wake me up. It’s glorious.
I hate it because sometimes it can really wear me out.
Sometimes my runs leave me feeling energized and ready for the day and sometimes they leave me feeling knackered and drained.
So because of this I now only run every other day to give myself some time to recover.
Plus there is such a thing as chronic cardio. It’s not good to just do cardio. I also do resistance workouts with weights.
Yes, girls can lift weights too!
In my opinion resistance workouts are the best ways to burn fat. Which is why I do both resistance training and running. You just need a good balance of both.
My runs usually go on for about 3-5 miles. That may seem a lot for some but it’s actually not that much. It’s very doable for someone with average fitness.
The essentials for a good run are;
- Good comfortable trainers.
- A small bottle of water.
- Some music.
Comfortable trainers are a must. Blisters hurt and can put you out of running for a week.
Water is a must when you go for a run. You don’t want to be dragging along a massive bottle so take a small bottle with you to keep hydrated.
If you have to cross lots of roads then you should be very careful if you are listening to music. Many people get run over and killed all around the world every year because they aren’t paying attention when they cross the road.
Don’t let this happen to you!
Also if you run when it is dark wear a high visibility jacket.
Running Outdoors VS The Treadmill
I have a treadmill. In the past I would never run outside. If I felt like running I would just hop on the treadmill.
But now I’ve started running outdoors I don’t think I’ll ever go back to the treadmill. Unless the weather is horrible outside.
Personally I get no joy from the treadmill. It’s just a way to exercise, plain and simple.
But running outdoors is something that is actually enjoyable. For a start you can do it with friends. There’s also more to look at. There’s the fresh air. It’s just an overall a more enjoyable experience.
Some of you reading this may be self conscious about running outside where everyone can see you.
To counter this you can run early in the morning or in the evening. I rarely see many people when I go for my early morning runs.
But at the end of the day my advice is to not care about other people seeing you run. They wont be thinking anything bad about you, in fact they’ll probably be impressed to see someone making an effort to lose weight.
By running you can inspire other people to exercise! So try not to be so self conscious about exercising outdoors!
If you’ve not tried running outdoors then what are you waiting for. Put on your trainers and give it a go. But don’t blame me if your treadmill starts to gather dust because you may just grow to love your outdoors runs.
Thanks for reading.
